Research Cont...Are Those that Leave the Church Believers? Clearly unbelievers exist in our groups, but the conclusion that the loss of youth is based upon most in our groups not coming to genuine faith alters our view of the problem and thus our solutions. In our research with 1,500 teens we found that many felt they fell so far short of what they had been taught that they carried a load of guilt a large percentage of the time, forcing them to grow numb to further truth that would add to the sense of falling short. More importantly, as we looked into their eyes we often saw frustration and disillusionment. We also frequently saw the Lord behind those disillusioned eyes. Jesus commanded us to have a "child-like faith". Many of the students we interacted with professed faith as children. Should we question those decisions? If so we must also question many of the statistics based upon them including that a majority of people receive Christ by age 19, which is why we place such a high priority on reaching children and teens. We believe we are better served by seeking out the reasons that their hearts have grown distant from the Lord while under our care. This has helped us begin to understand why so many pre-teens and teens that had sensitive hearts for the Lord at young ages, have grown distant from the Lord. |
